TOURISTIC OVERVIEW OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF ALJEZUR:

A Paradise for Nature and Surf Lovers
The true gem of Aljezur is its coastline. Integrated within the Natural Park, the coastal area is a sanctuary of biodiversity, with imposing cliffs, golden dunes, and a sequence of uniquely beautiful beaches, many of which are considered among the best in Portugal for surfing.

Among the most iconic beaches are:

Arrifana Beach: A shell-shaped bay, sheltered by tall cliffs, very popular with surfers and families. The small fishing village on the cliff top adds special charm.

Amado Beach: Internationally known for its excellent surf conditions, it hosts several national and international surfing competitions.

Monte Clérigo Beach: A wide, white sand beach, ideal for long walks and pure nature appreciation.

Bordeira Beach: Famous for its vast sandy expanse and the mouth of the Bordeira stream, which sometimes forms a lagoon a place of great scenic beauty.

Odeceixe Beach: Located at the mouth of the Seixe River, which marks the natural border between the Algarve and the Alentejo, this beach uniquely offers both sea and river bathing.

Local Culture and Gastronomy
Aljezur is a Refuge of Nature and History on the Vicentine Coast of the Algarve. A picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park (Faro district), Aljezur captivates with its duality: the tranquility of a rich historical heritage and the vibrant energy of its wild and preserved coastline. Far from the hustle of major Algarve tourist centers, Aljezur offers an authentic experience where land and sea exist in perfect harmony.

A Dive into History
Aljezurs history is etched into its narrow streets and the imposing Moorish castle atop the hill. Founded by the Arabs in the 10th century, the village was an important river port during the Al-Andalus period. Its Christian reconquest in 1249 by D. Paio Peres Correia is a key milestone in the regions history. The Castle of Aljezur, with its walls and cisterns, offers panoramic views over the village and surrounding green fields, silently witnessing centuries of history.

The village is divided into two distinct zones: the historic area with Moorish layout, extending along the castle slope, and the New Church area, a flatter zone developed after the 1755 earthquake. Walking through the historic center reveals charming corners, whitewashed houses with colorful trim, and a serene atmosphere. The 16th-century Church of Mercy and the 18th-century Main Church of Our Lady of the Dawn are other architectural highlights.

Aljezurs culture is deeply connected to the land and the sea. Agriculture, especially sweet potato cultivation, and fishing remain essential. Aljezurs sweet potato is so prominent that it has its own annual festival in October, where it can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.

Local gastronomy reflects this legacy, with fresh fish and seafood dishes featured in restaurant menus. Seabream, seabass, and goose barnacles are unmissable specialties. The traditional sweet potato desserts are the perfect way to end a meal.
