Graciosa Island, designated by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, is the northernmost island of the five that make up the Central Group of the Azores archipelago. It is known as the White Island, a designation inspired by the geomorphological characteristics and toponymic elements of the island, with special emphasis on the names given in places such as Pedras Brancas, Serra Branca and Barro Branco.

The island has a municipality, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, consisting of four parishes: Vila de Santa Cruz, Vila da Praia, Guadalupe and Luz. Santa Cruz stands out for its typical houses, cobblestone streets, branching off from the wide central square, where you can see the bandstand, water tanks and araucarias. It is worth visiting the Mother Church of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Santo Cristo, Cruz da Barra and the Ethnographic Museum, which brings together pieces related to the culture of wine, with traditions on the island, and whaling.

In the village of Praia, the highlight goes to the Church of São Mateus which has a pipe organ from 1793, one of the most beautiful in the Azores and in Guadalupe, the Church with the same name, dating from the XVIII century. XVII.

On Monte Nossa Senhora da Ajuda we have a beautiful panoramic view over Santa Cruz, the northern part of the Island. In this area we can also visit three hermitages dedicated to St. John, St. Savior and Our Lady of Help. The latter is one of the best examples of fortified religious architecture in the Azores. It has attached the house of the pilgrims intended to welcome those who went there on pilgrimage.

The islands architectural heritage is preserved in various types of buildings, with emphasis on churches, hermitages, rural houses, and a curious water architecture associated with a century-old network of reservoirs and drinking water supply systems. Another very characteristic note of the landscape of this island are the windmills with red domes, of Flemish inspiration, which testify to the abundant production of cereals from other times.
